Shifflett8wms 6th & 7th graders: Meet at 9:20 Shifflett6wms I'm excited to begin a new year with the middle school reading students! This year we will be using the Sonday System Reading program to target basic decoding skills. I have seen students achieve GREAT progress with their reading/spelling if they are willing to work hard and follow the program.
Students have been completing beginning of the year I-Ready assessments in Reading and Math. We will begin working in the Sonday I program on 9/16/19 starting with some review and teaching/reteaching the program protocols for reading and spelling. We spent time last week talking about students' individual goals for improving their reading and spelling skills. Language!Live students are working in lesson 6 (of 10 lessons) in Unit 1. They continue to do a great job with their independent work in the "Word Training" portion of the program online. It's great to see how motivated students are to work through the lessons! They are enjoying the competitive aspect of the program where they are working toward various achievements to earn points. I am so proud of all of them! Have your student log in to Language!Live at home so they can show you what they are working on!
Sonday II students are making great progress. We have been working on prefixes in lesson 26, including "for", "fore", "post", "para", "with", "tele", Lesson 27 will focus on a variety of suffixes. Students will have a mastery test after lesson 27. Reminder that 10/30 is the last day of the quarter. For this school year, the Middle School Reading class will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Please contact me if you have any questions about your child's progress in reading. I am excited to be using the Language!Live curriculum with some of the middle school reading groups this year. Students have completed benchmark and other reading assessments within the program and have been grouped accordingly. Students have been placed in either Level 1 or Level 2, depending on their performance on the initial assessments.
The program consists of Word Training (completed online, with teacher moderation) and Text Training (direct instruction with the teacher). The Word Training component in each level will target skills in phonemic awareness and phonics (reading and spelling). Text Training will include vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar and writing. Please ask your student to explain about "Course Points", "Achievements" and "Leaderboards"! The website can be accessed from home and students can work in the Word Training component from home. They will need headphones, with a microphone, to complete assignments at home online. Sonday System II students are reviewing concepts taught in levels 22, 23 and 24 in preparation for taking the Mastery Test at level 24. Concepts included: "y" rule, ei, ie, eigh, wor, war, and sight words. We have discussed the origins of words in the English Language (and why English is so complicated!). Ask your student how the English language has been influenced by other cultures in the past. Students and Parents:
